  • Clock Glitching and Frequency Monitoring

    Clock glitching is a common fault injection method. The MCU lockbit can be bypassed by injecting a clock pulse at the wrong time. This can corrupt the instruction fetch. The attacker can skip the lock check. To counter this, MCUs have a clock monitor. The monitor checks the clock frequency. If the frequency deviates, the MCU resets. The reset clears any ongoing operation. The read-out of an EEPROM processor is aborted. Dump flash and eeprom is aborted. Decapsulation and code recovery are not relevant. Copy contents of crypto memory is stopped. Microcontroller reverse engineering cannot proceed. The clock monitor also detects missing clock pulses. A missing pulse indicates a glitch. The monitor triggers an alarm. The MCU lock then locks permanently. This prevents further attempts. In conclusion, clock glitching countermeasures are vital for the MCU lock. They protect against timing faults that could enable extraction. Integrated Security Lifecycle Management for MCUs. The MCU lockbit is not a one-time setting. It must be managed throughout the device's lifecycle. From manufacturing to disposal, the lock status changes. Initially, the lock is open for programming. After programming, it is locked. Later, updates may require temporary unlocking. The lifecycle includes secure erase at end-of-life. The read-out of an EEPROM processor is only allowed during certain phases. Dump flash and eeprom is controlled by the lifecycle state. Decapsulation and code recovery are only relevant if the device is in a trusted phase. Copy contents of crypto memory is permitted only for authorized personnel. Microcontroller reverse engineering is part of failure analysis, but with strict oversight. Firmware extraction is a standard process for debugging, but it requires authentication. The lock enforces these phase-dependent rules. It uses a state machine. The state machine transitions based on cryptographic commands. Each transition requires a key. The key is held by the manufacturer. This ensures that the lock is only opened when necessary.
